Sanitise is a physical and visual performance piece which playfully and tenderly explores questions of female identity through the fantasy world of one woman in her bathroom.
The audience are invited on a private, comedic, curious journey into one woman’s insecurities, fantasies and questions about her sexual and domestic identities. We discover a woman right on the edge, confused and disgusted by the outside world. Her ideas and expectations have become twisted through the obscure lens of popular culture and distorted by her own obsessive mind. The bathroom has become a self-made sanctuary, and she finds pure joy in sanitising this magical tiny place, the only place safe enough to be free in. On the day we meet her, demons from the outside world and from her own imagination are starting to invade the bathroom and it is time for a change. Desperately isolated, she arms herself with the tools she hopes will help her through and embarks upon a journey of self discovery which brings us face to face with the dark and absurd side of our sexual and domestic ideals. Both tragic and uplifting, Sanitise follows one woman’s search for liberation.
Sanitise is a non verbal, visual performance combining physical theatre with illustration which work together to paint the internal and external world of our protagonist.
"Sanitise is fresh and exciting work; engaging and enjoyable, but also keenly sharp. We were very pleased to produce an early version of the project as part of the ANATOMY event series at Summerhall, and believe it has a strong future, especially with funded support." -- Harry Giles, Co-Director, ANATOMY
